Statement on British Values – St George’s CE Infant School

St George’s CE Infant School is committed to serving its community and surrounding areas. It recognises the multi-cultural, multi faith and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom, and therefore those it serves. It also understands the vital role it has in ensuring that groups or individuals within the school are not subjected to intimidation or radicalisation by those wishing to unduly or illegally influence them.

The school, as a Voluntary Controlled (VC) Church of England School, accepts admissions from all those entitled to an education under British law, including pupils of all faiths or different world views. Neither you nor your child need be a Christian or from any other faith group to attend St George’s CE Infant and Preschool. It follows the policies outlined by its Governing Body regarding equal opportunities, which guarantee that there will be no discrimination against any individual or group, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status, or similar. Our school vision ‘Inspire, Believe, Achieve-Let your light shine’ enables every child to flourish during their time at St George’s.

The Government emphasises that schools are required to ensure that key ‘British Values’ are taught in all UK schools. The government set out its definition of British values in the ‘Prevent Strategy’ values of:

Democracy
The rule of law
Individual liberty and personal responsibility
Mutual respect
Tolerance of those of different cultures, faiths and beliefs

Should you feel that the school is not meeting this requirement, you should contact the school office and request to express your concerns to the Headteacher or Chair of Governors.

How do we promote British Values at St George’s?

Democracy:

· All children are involved in democratic processes e.g. choosing School Councillors, selecting addition rewards and selection of appropriate resources such as playground games.

· School Councillors are elected by peers and have a responsibility to report back the rest of their class.

· Fostering the concept of free speech.

Rule of Law:

· School Behaviour Policy is shared with all stakeholders.

· Children can receive a Champion of the Week sticker for demonstrating one of the school’s values.

· Moral sign posts are displayed around the school.

· Children reflect regularly on their learning and their behaviour during Collective Worship.

· Visits from our local community police officer.

Personal Responsibility and Liberty:

· Children demonstrate a clear understanding of expectation of behaviour.

· Children take responsibilities as monitors, councillors, Eco Warriers, Community Champions, Worship Leaders and performers.

· School core value of ‘commitment’.

· Children presented with values Champion of the Week certificates.

· Home/School/Child Agreement on entry to school.

· Reflections during Prayer Spaces.

· Values embedded in school practice and displayed around the school.

Mutual respect:

· PHSE and RE curriculum.

· PSED in Early Years.

· Clear behaviour policy enforced across the school.

· Anti-bullying Charter.

· School value of ‘Compassion’ and ‘Community’.

· Positive role models are praised and encouraged.

· Collective Worship themes.

· Promotion of ‘fair play’ in PE and Sport sessions

· Inviting parents to share home cultures in school.

Courage	I will be brave. I will do what is right even if my friends tell me to do otherwise.
